New built The Rock

Actiflow gave insight in the thermal climate in the atrium. An extensive CFD study was performed, consisting of simulations of various weather conditions and different settings of the HVAC systems

LBP|SIGHT is an engineering agency focussed on buildings, the environment and ecology. Their vision is that specialisation is crucial to develop smart, innovative and practical solutions. LBP|SIGHT used this vision for the development of The Rock.

The Rock was designed by the renowned architect Eric van Egeraat. This building is part of the Zuidas Business District in Amsterdam. The key feature of this building is a large atrium of approximately 90 meters high. A glass facade gives the atrium a spacious look, but it also poses a serious challenge to the indoor climate design.

LBP|SIGHT asked Actiflow to give insight in the thermal climate in the atrium. We performed an extensive CFD study, which consisted of simulations of various weather conditions and different settings of the HVAC systems. We included all relevant factors, such as outdoor temperature, solar radiation, thermal loads caused by equipment and occupants of the building, etc.

Using the information provided by Actiflow, the client was able to guarantee an acceptable level of thermal comfort in the atrium under all conditions.
