LBP|SIGHT is an engineering agency focussed on buildings, the environment and ecology. Their vision is that specialization is crucial to develop smart, innovative and practical solutions. This vision is also used for the development of The Edge.
The Edge is an office building of 40.000 m² developed by OVG Real Estate. The project obtained the highest BREEAM score worldwide in 2014, BREEAM Outstanding. A defining element in the building is the 14 stories atrium containing the entrance zone, central meeting space and a restaurant.
LBP|SIGHT asked Actiflow to give insight in the thermal climate in the atrium when subjected to worst case conditions in summer (high solar gains) or winter (cold downdraught from the large glass surfaces). Actiflow modelled the entire atrium and added HVAC for air supply and local cooling or heating. CFD simulations visualized the local comfort. This resulted in several design adaptations to ensure comfortable use of the atrium.
With these simulations Actiflow contributed to the optimization of the design in terms of both comfort and sustainability.
