Royers Lock – Flanders Hydraulics Research

Actiflow was asked to calculate the outflow from the culverts in the lock chamber during the filling process

The Royers Lock is located at the right bank of the river Scheldt (Belgium) and gives access to the Port of Antwerp. The lock will be upgraded to enable the passage of more and larger ships. Flanders Hydraulics Research is in charge of the hydraulic design of the filling and emptying system for the new lock.

Actiflow was asked to calculate the outflow from the culverts in the lock chamber during the filling process, in order to define an optimise geometry of the outlet of the culverts in the lock chamber.

Different culvert and outlet geometries were studied using both steady and time-dependent CFD calculations. This resulted in an optimized geometry.
