Wind comfort

in the built environment

Wind comfort in the built environment, pedestrian wind comfort, comfort on private outdoor spaces

An acceptable wind microclimate around buildings and in open public spaces is becoming increasingly important to ensure pedestrian comfort and safety. Adverse wind conditions can impact the quality and functionality of public space and, in extreme cases, raise safety concerns.

Actiflow can help in all stages of the design, whether it is providing an advice during early design stages, or preparing a complete pedestrian wind microclimate assessment to support planning application.

We offer quantitative CFD studies using state-of-the-art methodology, or qualitative desk-based studies using our experience to advise on likely effects of the new development on the surrounding wind microclimate.

All our wind microclimate assessments consider relevant wind microclimate guidelines provided by individual planning authorities (e.g. NEN8100 in the Netherlands, Wind microclimate guidelines for City of London or Wind microclimate guidelines for Leeds in the UK).

Our expertise includes knowledge of aerodynamics, wind and building interaction, and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). We analyze and visualize wind flow in an urban environment to support design of comfortable public or private spaces. We collaborate closely with architects, project developers, engineering firms, landscape architects and municipalities.

Overview Actiflow wind studies

On the map below you find all our wind assessments. By zooming in you go to the specific location and / or project.
Areas with multiple developments show a greater number of wind studies. Actiflow has a great deal of prior knowledge of the local wind climate and requirements set by municipalities in these regions. This allows us to provide detailed advice on a project without even having to perform an actual wind assessment.
